SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
District 206 was awarded a grant for Safe Routes to School Planning (SRTS) that is currently happening, and a plan will be completed in the spring of 2024.
Six overarching goals will guide the implementation of the Strategic Plan over the next five years to make progress towards the established vision:
ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION PLANNING
Applying for an Active Transportation Planning Assistance grant from the MN Dept of Transportation is a crucial step for a community to enhance the well-being of its residents and foster a healthier, more vibrant community. This planning grant is funded through the state which has a designated statewide planning consultant to steer this work. Plans will include an analysis of existing conditions, public outreach and identification of potential infrastructure and non-infrastructure solutions to work towards helping more people walk and bicycle safely to destinations where they live, work, and play.
The current momentum in our community is evident through the ongoing Safe Routes to School Planning grant for Alexandria Public Schools, reflecting a commitment to the safety and well-being of students. Collaborations with Douglas County further amplify this effort, particularly around the Central Lakes Trail corridor, aiming to increase access and usage for pedestrian travel. Ultimately, securing the Active Transportation Planning Assistance grant is a strategic investment in building a healthier, more connected, and livable community.
